Position Summary: The Vice President & Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) serves as the senior physician executive responsible for clinical operations and care delivery performance across the inpatient enterprise at Luminis Health. Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President & Chief Physician Executive (CPE) and matrix reporting to the Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer (COO), the CCO partners closely with nursing, operational, and physician leadership to ensure safe, efficient, high-quality, and patient-centered care delivery across all hospital settings. The CCO is accountable for optimizing the clinical operating model of the hospitals, including throughput, length of stay, care coordination, documentation integrity, patient flow, quality initiatives, and physician operational alignment. This role drives operational execution and clinical reliability to improve patient outcomes, patient experience, quality metrics, and financial performance in support of organizational priorities and evolving value-based care models, including the Maryland AHEAD model. The CCO is responsible for advancing enterprise reliability and operational consistency across inpatient clinical operations, ensuring care delivery is coordinated, standardized, efficient, and aligned across hospitals, service lines, and care settings. Operating within a highly matrixed environment, the CCO collaborates across clinical, operational, and administrative leadership to advance standardized care delivery models, reduce unwarranted variation, and strengthen system integration across inpatient services. The CCO serves as a physician leader and trusted operational partner who fosters accountability, collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement while supporting high-performing multidisciplinary teams and advancing a culture of quality, safety, and operational excellence. Essential Functions & Responsibilities: Clinical Operations Leadership Provide executive leadership for inpatient clinical operations across the health system. Drive operational performance related to patient throughput, length of stay, capacity management, discharge planning, and care transitions. Serve as a dyad partner with the system Chief Nursing Officer. Partner with Nursing, Operations, and Physician leadership to improve efficiency, coordination, and reliability of care delivery. Lead initiatives to reduce operational friction, improve patient flow, and accelerate quality care delivery improvements across inpatient settings. Standardize clinical operating models, workflows, and service expectations across sites to improve reliability, efficiency, and patient experience. Advance care standardization efforts to reduce unwarranted variation and improve outcomes. Advance system-wide integration strategies that ensure clinical and operational decisions are made with an enterprise perspective and executed consistently across care settings. Strengthen coordination across inpatient, ambulatory, post-acute, and physician enterprise operations to support seamless patient care delivery. Collaborate with finance and operations leaders on budget development, labor management, capital prioritization, productivity targets, and cost stewardship. Support service line growth, new program implementation, and operational integration across the healthcare system. Quality, Safety & Value-Based Performance Partner with Quality and Operational leadership to improve clinical quality, patient safety, patient experience, and regulatory performance. Drive physician engagement and team engagement in quality and performance improvement initiatives. Support organizational goals related to value-based care, HSCRC quality metrics, readmissions, mortality, and patient outcomes. Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and high reliability across clinical operations. Support readiness for regulatory, accreditation, and payer performance requirements. Oversee the development and implementation of clinical policies, protocols, and operating procedures that support safe, efficient, compliant care delivery. Care Coordination & Clinical Integration Lead physician operational alignment efforts across inpatient care settings. Collaborate with ambulatory and post-acute leadership to improve care coordination and transitions of care. Responsible for the Physician Advisor team and partner with interdisciplinary teams to improve utilization management, documentation integrity, and resource stewardship. Support system integration initiatives that improve continuity and coordination across the care continuum. Physician Leadership & Engagement Foster physician engagement and operational alignment in support of enterprise priorities. Mentor and support physician leaders involved in clinical operations and performance improvement initiatives. Collaborate with Department Chairs, Executive Medical Directors, Nursing leadership, and operational leaders to advance organizational goals. Promote multidisciplinary collaboration and a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement. Clinical Transformation & Innovation Support innovative care delivery models, including virtual care, hospital-at-home, and other emerging clinical strategies. Partner with Information Technology leadership to optimize clinical workflows and EHR functionality. Utilize clinical analytics, operational data, and performance metrics to drive enterprise decision-making, care standardization, and continuous improvement initiatives. Advance data-driven operational decision-making and clinical analytics utilization. Support organizational readiness for future payment and delivery reform initiatives. Advance system-wide consistency in physician governance and professional practice expectations. Completion of ACGME-accredited residency. Current Board Certification. Eligible for medical licensure in Maryland. Advanced degree (MBA, MPH, MHA, or equivalent) is strongly preferred. Experience: Minimum 7–10 years of progressive physician leadership experience in a complex healthcare environment. Demonstrated success leading clinical operations, quality, and performance improvement initiatives. Experience working in highly matrixed healthcare organizations. Strong understanding of value-based care, utilization management, and operational performance metrics. Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and influence physician engagement.
